Hi I'm Adam, owner/operator of Studio SMP Gold Coast. After restoring my own hairline back in 2016, I saw the amazing potential of scalp micropigmentation and went to NZ to learn everything I could from a leading artist. FAQs
How many sessions do I need?
At Studio SMP treatments are done over 3 sessions, with each session spaced approx. 7 days apart. This allows enough time for the pigment to settle and heal into the skin. Each session we cover the entire balding area, layering it on each time, making it darker and denser until the desired look is achieved. It's a gradual process, allowing you to make changes and tweaks as we go. Each session generally takes around 2 hours.
Will it look strange after the first session?
No, it will be slightly red for a few hours, more so if your skin is lighter. However, once the redness subsides the treatment looks very natural, even after the first session. It will just look light. In the second session we focus on filling in the gaps, giving it more density. After the second session things start to look about 80% complete. The third session is where we finish it off, making sure the hairline is exactly how you want it, the treatment colour matches the existing hair and is blended well.
Is it suitable for blonde/grey/red hair?
Yes, as long as the hair is shaved down or kept very short. This is because the hair colour itself is in the hair shaft. Once the shaft is shaved down everybody's roots are a shade of grey. This 'shadow' is the colour we match. All our pigments are dilutions of black, from pure black which is for dark skin/hair, to really diluted and watered down black (essentially light grey) which is suited for lighter hair/skin, plus everything in between. We don't use blonde/red ink for blonde/red hair, that would just be weird :)
Will it change blue/green over time?
No. All our pigments are specifically designed for scalp micropigmentation. They contain no iron oxide and are purely carbon based, so will NOT change colour over time. The pigments will fade and lighten over time; however, this will always be on the greyscale. Our pigments are very different to your traditional tattoo inks which do tend to change colour over time.
How long does it last?
Scalp micropigmentation is very different to a traditional tattoo. We don't go as deep into the skin, and our needles are a lot finer. As a result, the treatment is only semi-permanent and will lighten and fade over time. If you like it looking dark and fresh, we recommend touch-ups every 2-3 years. If you don't mind it looking a little lighter and subtle you could get your touch-ups every 5-10 years. The cost of touch-ups is significantly less than the initial treatment. Touch-ups are also a great opportunity to update your style - we can change the hairline etc.
